Young fisherman Joel experiences heartbreak when his beloved Maricel chooses to marry another. Leaving his mother and brothers behind, he departs their small village for Havana to start over. Struggling at first, he finds some success with boxing, and begins to learn the ways of big-city life. But ultimately Joel rediscovers life’s disappointments and betrayals all over again. Working in a naturalistic, neorealistic vein, Russian director Mikhail Kosyrev-Nesterov’s sensitive film combines the timeless lessons of a folk tale with contemporary docu-dramatic reportage, ably abetted by a stirring musical soundtrack and the stunning visuals of cinematographer Oleg Loukitchev. Official Selection, 2008 Tokyo and Sao Paulo and 2009 Palm Springs and Santa Barbara film festivals.
Special Guest: Director Mikhail Kosyrev-Neterov |
